John Tyson’s Annual Sale, 1900

If this were 1900, we’d all be headed out to John Tyson’s sale.  From the October 19, 1900 Skidmore Standard (Skidmore, Missouri):

John Tyson’s Annual Sale of Fine Hogs and Bulls
To be sold at his farm, 9 1/2 miles north of Mound City, 4 1/2 miles south of Dotham, 9 1/2 miles southwest of Skidmore, and 13 1/2 miles northeast of Craig, Tuesday, Oct. 30

45 Poland China Hogs, Royal Tops, boars and gilts sired by Young Chief Tecumseh 2d 17035 and Grand Victor 20351c.

Young Chief Tecumseh 2d is without doubt one of the best individual and breeding boars in Missouri, having for sires, Chief Tecumseh 2d the greatest boar the world has ever known, being the sire of more prize winners and high priced hogs than any boar living or dead.

Grand Victor is a very large smooth yearling, a hog I got from Indiana having for a sire Eagle Victor of the noted Victor family which was so successful at the Chicago World’s Fair and the late eastern state fairs. His dam Edna Wilkes of the two noted families of the Wilkes and the Freetrade.

I consider this by far the most even and best bunch of pigs I have ever raised. Are large, good boned, and all black in color, and their dams are of the most noted families.

6 Pedigreed Short Horn Bulls.
Sired by the straight Scotch bred bull Model Duke 127859.

Model Duke is a large, square, blocky, clean boned, dark red bull and breeds very much like himself. He was sired by the 2500 pound Duke of Hamilton 2d 107363 and his dam by the 2700 pound imported Baron Cruickshank 106207. The dam of one of the bulls is Mary Glamas, the dam of a bull that went to head a heard in Indiana at $300, and she is also the grand dam of one of the others, and these are the making of two fine bulls and the other four are all out of good cows and all well bred. All are dark reds and have red dams.

All stock raisers are invited to attend the sale.
Sale to begin at 10 o’clock.
