Rock Port Flour Parade

Was it flour or flower, or both? One can only dream of becoming Queen of the Flour Parade and all the other excellent activities set for the big crowds of well behaved people promised at the Rock Port Fair in September 1901. It was certainly well advertised, as seen in the August 23, 1901 Skidmore Standard, page 4:

Rock Port Fair.
Sept. 10-13.

FLOUR PARADE AND TRADES DISPLAY.
Arrangements are being perfected for a great Flour Parade and Trades Display Carnival to be given at Rock Port Fair Grounds during the last two days of the Fair, Sept. 12 and 13, 1901. Prizes will be offered for the best merchant’s float, decorated vehicle, bicycle, lady horseback rider, and burlesque. Competition open to the county – including Hamburg, Iowa.

THE QUEEN.
Arrangements are also being made to carry on the voting contest for Queen of the Carnival. It is the purpose of the committee to have each town in the county nominate candidates and compete for the honor. Tickets will be sold at 5 cents per vote, and it is hoped that in this way sufficient interest will be taken to make the affair of notice elsewhere as well as at Rock Port, and in fact to attract attention all over the surrounding country – a living advertisement for a progressive community. Watch the newspapers for the full particulars.

PREMIUM LIST, ROCK PORT FLOUR CARNIVAL.

No better nor more pleasant and convenient fair grounds can be found in the state of Missouri, than at Rock Port, with an abundance of room, pleasant shades, large seating capacity, good water and plenty of it.

It matters not what the occasion, Rock Port is famous for big crowds of well behaved people. Great crowds come and go without trouble. The coming fair will have the largest crowds in the history of the society, and they will be better entertained than ever before.
