Small Town Directions

When everyone knows everyone, street names and house numbers seem less important. From the November 11, 1899 Skidmore Standard:

A lady alighted from the train last Saturday morning and inquired where one of our townsmen lives. Then she asked for the name of the street and the house number. This was more than the boy whom she questioned could tell but he conducted her to the correct house. The fact of the matter is, although Skidmore is becoming quite metropolitan in some things, the houses are not numbered and very few of the town people know the names of the streets.
